To provide a monomolecular azo compound having metallic luster.
The method for producing the azo compound comprises a first step for diazotizing p-aminophenol, a second step for subjecting the diazo compound to a coupling reaction to synthesize 4,4'-dihydroyxazobenzene (OH-azo), a third step for synthesizing 4,4'-di(2-bromoethoxy)azobenzene (Br-azo) using 1,2-dibromoethane, and a fourth step for synthesizing 4,4'-di(2-dialkylaminoethoxy)azobenzene (DN-azo) using dimethylamine. The DN-azo has an advantage of being readily produced from p-aminophenol. A crystal of the DN-azo has golden luster, is stable, suffers from no change in its golden luster even when kept in the air for long terms, and does not fade even when irradiated with light including ultraviolet rays. The azo compound can be not only applied in solution but also vacuum-deposited as an azo dye and therefore it can be applied to a wide range of applications.
