PURPOSE: To obtain a granular olefin polymer substance by uniformly grafting a monomer while minimizing degradation or visbreaking of the polymers without formation of crosslinkage of the polymer substrate.
CONSTITUTION: The graft copolymers of olefin polymers by free radical initiated graft polymerizing one or more vinyl monomers with a free radical group portion on granular olefin polymer substances having i) ≥40% of a diameter of pore: ≥1 μ; pore volumetric rate: ≥0.07, ii) surface area: ≥0.1 m2/g, iii) wt. mean diameter: ≥0.4-7 mm are provided. The graft copolymers are prepared by a process contg. 1) irradiating the granular olefin polymer substances with an ionized radiation at a temp. of 10-85°C, 2) then treating with a vinyl monomer at a temp. up to 100°C, 3) maintaining a nonoxidizing environment throughout the process while free radicalls produced in the olefin polymers by the irradiation are present, and, in a final step, deactivating the residual free radicals and removing any unreacted monomer.
