An alumina fiber precursor obtained by spinning solution containing mainly an aluminum compound is dropped and accumulated on an accumulator to form an alumina fiber precursor thin layer sheet. The thin layer sheet is continuously pulled out of the accumulator, fed to a folder and continuously moved perpendicularly to a folding direction while being folded and layered at a preset width, to form a layered sheet with the thin layer sheet layered, The layered sheet is subjected to needling and then fired to form an alumina fiber sheet which constitutes the gripping material.
