A light source 1 is constituted by integrating light emitting diode elements radiating red light, green light and blue light as a light emitting means. After a light beam radiated from the light source 1 is changed to parallel light beams by a lens 2, it irradiates the mirror surface of a micro deflecting mirror array type spatial optical modulation element 3 through a half mirror 4 forming a projected light and reflected light separation optical system. The element 3 reflects image signal light the color of which corresponds to the color of the light beam to the half mirror 4. The reflected image signal light is made incident on a user's eye 7 through the half mirror 4, a projection lens 5 and a half mirror 6 so as to form an image on the retina.
