To provide a method of heating a catalyst in the exhaust gas of an internal-combustion engine using the secondary air, and provide a controller therefor, the engine being supercharged by use of an exhaust gas turbocharger.
The supercharged internal-combustion engine 10 includes an exhaust gas system 28 whereto air is supplied, in which the supplied air is taken from the suction system 22 of the engine 10 located behind a compressor 38 of the exhaust gas turbocharger 34 installed in the suction system 22 when viewed in the air flowing direction, and thus the catalysts 30 and 32 in the exhaust gas system 28 are heated. The internal-combustion engine 10 is operated with direct injection of the fuel into its combustion chamber 12, wherein after the start of the engine, the fuel amount injected before the start of combustion is divided into at least two partial injections (ti_1 and ti_2) per ignition and combustion chamber and also a next best or the optimum ignition angle efficiency is established.
