PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound having HMG-CoA reductase-inhibiting action and useful as a synthetic intermediate for antihyperlipemic agents.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H, a protecting group of OH or R1 and R2 together form a protecting group of OH; R3 is H, an alkyl or an aromatic hydrocarbon), e.g. methyl 3,5-dimethoxymethoxy-7- oxoheptanoate. The compound of formula I is obtained by subjecting and octenoic acid derivative of formula II (R4 and R5 are each H, on alkyl, an aromatic hydrocarbon, a heterocyclic ring, or R4 and R5 together form a cycloalkilidene group) to oxidative decomposition. The compound of formula I can be derivated into a compound useful as an antihyperlipemic agent having HMG-CoA reductase-inhibiting activity by subjecting the compound of formula I to dehydration, deprotection, etc.
