Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for retaining or reducing the pour point of estolide base oils and a method of producing the estolide base oils.SOLUTION: A method of synthesizing estolide comprises the steps of: selecting an estolide base oil having an initial EN (estolide number) and an initial pour point; and removing at least a portion of the estolide base oil, the portion exhibiting an EN that is less than the initial EN of the estolide base oil. The resulting estolide base oil exhibits an EN that is greater than the initial EN of the estolide base oil, and a pour point that is equal to or lower than the initial pour point of the estolide base oil. The EN represents the average number of estolide linkages in an estolide compound containing the estolide base oil.SELECTED DRAWING: None
