Title:
HIGH-TOUGHNESS SILICON NITRIDE-BASED COMPOSITE SINTERED COMPACT AND ITS PRODUCTION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2743638
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a high-toughness sintered compact to be used in automotive parts, wear-resistant tools, etc.
CONSTITUTION: The objective sintered compact with titanium nitride dispersed in a Matrix phase composed of 10-90 vol% of silicon nitride, the rest of silicon oxynitride and grain boundary phase. The present sintered compact can be obtained by the following processes: a mixture of noncrystalline silicon nitride and titanium dioxide is heat treated at 1300-1800°C for 1-100hr in a nitriding atmosphere to produce composite fine powder, a sintering aid is then added to the powder followed by preliminary molding and then sintering at 1500-1900°C for 2-10hr. In this way, the objective silicon nitride ceramic excellent in both mechanical strength and breaking toughness can be produced and expected for applying to various structural members including automotive parts.
