To provide a hybrid automobile 10 motoring an engine 18 during regenerative braking, which uses up excessive electric power at the beginning of motoring before engine rotation is started.
When the hybrid automobile 10 is braked, the motor 14 generates power to regenerate kinetic energies and thus a battery 16 is charged. After motor regenerative electric power P_regen exceeds a battery charging limit P_bat_lim, a generator 20 coupled to the engine 18 is motored (t2) to use up the excessive electric power. Consequently, generator efficiency ηgen is kept lower than its maximum efficiency until the rotating speed ng of the generator 20 motoring the engine 18 increases up to a set rotating speed ng_set (t3).
