To obtain a halogenated aromatic amine useful for producing medicines, photographic chemicals, etc., in high purity in a high yield at a low cost in a state little in the ratio of dehalogenated products by catalystically hydrogenating the corresponding nitro compound in the presence of a specific catalyst.
(B) A halogenated nitro aromatic compound {e.g. a compound of the formula: A-NO2 [A is a (substituted) aromatic group in which one or more of the ring carbon atoms in the aromatic ring are substituted by one or more of halogen atoms, especially C1 atoms] is catalystically hydrogenated in the presence of (A) an ironcontaining Raney nickel catalyst as a catalyst to obtain the corresponding halogenated aromatic amine (e.g. a compound of the formula: A-NH2). The component A preferably comprises 1-10wt.% of aluminum, 5-30wt.% of iron and the balance nickel on the basis of the dried products, and is used in an amount of 0.1-20wt.% based on the component B.
