Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for hydrogenating a sugar or a sugar mixture into a sugar alcohol or a sugar alcohol mixture.
SOLUTION: This method for hydrogenating a sugar or a sugar mixture into a sugar alcohol or a sugar alcohol mixture comprises hydrogenating the sugar or the sugar mixture with hydrogen in the presence of a shell catalyst containing a mixture of a pure Raney metal with a Raney metal alloy in an aqueous solution at a high temperature under a high pressure. The shell catalyst comprises a nucleus which functions as a carrier and is substantially inactive as a catalyst and a shell which is active as the catalyst.
