Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:4'-Hydroxy-4-trichloroacetylbiphenyl of formula I.
USE: An intermediate for 4'-Hydroxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid of formula II useful as a raw material for polymers and liquid crystals. The compound of the formula II can be obtained through simple, easy operation, from ready, economically available p-phenylphenol as the starting material.
PREPARATION: p-Phenylphenol is reacted in a hydrophobic solvent in the presence of a Friedel Crafts catalyst with trichloroacetyl chloride, trichloroacetonitrile or anhydrous trichloroacetic acid into the objective compound of the formula I. The present compound is then hydrolyzed and neutralized with an acid into the compound of the formula II.
