Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject high-purity substance freed of inorganic compounds and organic colored impurities, etc., by oxidatively coupling 2,6- xylenol and washing the resultant subject crude substance with acetic acid solvent with a specific moisture content.

CONSTITUTION: 2,6-Xylenol is oxidatively coupled in the presence of a catalyst such as a copper compound or alkali metal hydroxide to produce the subject crude substance (TMBP), which is then washed with acetic acid solvent with 3-70wt.% (preferably 10-60wt.%) moisture content and purified. If the washing operation is performed by a stirring and washing method, the solvent is used in an amount of 1.0-8.0 pts.wt. based on 1 pt.wt. powdery TMBP (on the dry basis). In a replacing washing for pouring the washing solvent onto the crude TMBP placed on a filter cloth of a filter, the washing solvent is used in an amount of 0.1-3.0 pts.wt. based on 1 pt.wt. powdery TMBP (on the dry basis). Thereby, the high-quality TMBP can be obtained by the simple and inexpensive means.
