PURPOSE: To provide a novel complex which is useful as a substrate of a catalyst system used in the stereospecific polymn. of an unsatd. monomer (e.g. a diolefin), is soluble in a polymn. solvent, and gives a catalyst system needing no previous formation nor aging.
CONSTITUTION: A complex of the formula: Me(Ar)(AlX3R)3 (wherein Me is a metal of the group IIIA, having an atomic number of 21, 39, or 57-71; Ar is a benzene ring optionally substd. by 1-3 (1-10C) alkyl groups; X is halogen; and R is 1-12C linear, cyclic, or branched alkyl) [e.g. a complex of the formula: Nd(toluene)(AlCl3CH3)3] is provided, which is obtd. e.g. by reacting NdCl3, toluene, and AlCl3 to give a toluene suspension of an Nd(toluene)(AlCl4)3 complex and slowly adding a toluene soln. of Al(CH3)3 dropwise to the suspension to carry out the reaction until Nd(toluene)(AlCl4)3, which is a solid, is completely dissolved.
