Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system which employs a dichroic mirror wheel and an image display device equipped with the same.
SOLUTION: The illumination optical system includes a light source which emits light and the dichroic mirror wheel where a plurality of dichroic mirrors sectioned into at least three segments to separate and reflect at least tricolor light of the light made incident from the light source are arrayed. The image display device includes the illumination optical system including the light source which emits the light and the dichroic mirror wheel where the plurality of dichroic mirrors sectioned into at least three segments to separate and reflect at least the tricolor light of the light made from the light source are arrayed, an image optical system which forms an image by modulating light made incident from the illumination optical system, and a projection optical system which projects light reflected by the image optical system on a screen. Consequently, the light is temporally and spatially separated to obtain an image of high resolution with reduced light loss.
