To switch an optical system for expanding a depth of field to a normal optical system, and automatically perform imaging using the optical system for expanding the depth of field, when two-dimensional (2D) recording information is recognized as a subject, in an image capturing apparatus which applies restoration processing to image data to expand an effective depth of field of the optical system.
Pre-image data of a subject 5 previously acquired prior to main imaging of the subject 5 are analyzed to classify whether the subject 5 is 2D recording information. If the subject 5 is 2D recording information, a stop 11 is controlled and an aperture of the stop is enlarged so that light can be incident to both a phase modulated area and a phase non-modulated area of an optical system 13 (a lens with an integrated phase modulator). If the subject 5 is non-2D recording information, the stop 11 is controlled and the aperture of the stop is reduced so that light is made incident only to the phase non-modulated area of the optical system 13.
