To provide an image display device and an image display method that can prolong the life of an optical modulating element.
The image display device 10 is equipped with a total luminance value detecting means 121 of detecting the total luminance value of the whole image, a level detecting means 122 of detecting whether or not the total luminance value exceeds a designated level, and an incident light level lowering processing means of performing processing for lowering the quantities of illumination lights incident on liquid crystal panels 4R, 4G, and 4B constituting the optical modulating element based upon a function of the total luminance value when the level detecting means 122 detects the designated level being exceeded. With this constitution, the quantity of light of the whole image is decreased for a scene which is light on the whole, so the heat generation of the image display device is reducible and the life of the optical modulating element can be prolonged.
