Provided is an image display device including a liquid crystal optical element, an image display section and a control section. The liquid crystal optical element includes a first substrate section, a second substrate section, and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate section includes a first substrate, a plurality of main electrodes, and a first sub electrode. The second substrate section includes a second substrate and a first counter electrode. The liquid crystal layer is provided between the first substrate section and the second substrate section. The image display section displays a plurality (first to an N-th) of parallax images. The control section controls potential of the electrode and forms refractive index distribution in the liquid crystal layer. Refractive index falls, rises and falls from the central area among the main electrodes toward outside. Light containing a k-th parallax image of a single element image area is emitted through the central area, and light containing the k-th parallax image of an element image area adjacent to the image area is emitted through a portion where refractive index rises.
