To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing the reduction of the number of image output sheets in a fixed time, and effectively cleaning residual toner left after secondary transfer on an intermediate transfer body.
The image forming apparatus 100 is composed of: a bias output means 91 for outputting a bias to a recovery member 9; a detecting means 92 for detecting the output current value or the output voltage value of the bias output means 91 when the constant voltage control of the recovery member 9 is performed by the bias output means 91 or when the constant current control bias is outputted by the bias output means 91; and a control means 17 for deciding a timing to perform a discharging operation where an electrical field having a direction to move the toner electrified with a prescribed polarity from the recovery member 9 to an intermediate transfer body 7 is formed between the recovery member 9 and the intermediate transfer body 7 in accordance with the output current value or the output voltage value detected by the detecting means 92 in reply to the output of the bias by the bias output means 91 to the recovery member 9.
