To provide an image forming apparatus wherein the original function of an image carrier is developed, and the life of the image carrier is prolonged.
The image forming apparatus of the present invention includes: a secondary transfer unit 60 for secondarily transferring a toner image carried on an intermediate transfer belt 40 to a recording medium that is fed so as to come in contact with the toner image; a fixing unit 80 for permanently fixing the toner image by heating the toner image transferred on the recording medium by the secondary transfer unit 60; a preheater 70 provided in a belt driving roller 41 for the secondary transfer unit 60, for preheating; a center fixing heater 82 and an end fixing heater 83 provided in the fixing roller 81 for the fixing unit 80, used for thermal fixation. A distance from the nip area exit of the secondary transfer unit 60 to the nip area entrance of the fixing part is set shorter than the length in the conveying direction of the recording medium of minimum size used for the image forming apparatus, and also, the preheat temperature in the second transfer unit 60 is set equal to or exceeding a room temperature, and set equal to or below a toner melting temperature.
