An image forming apparatus includes a contact/separation mechanism 2 that switches a contact/separation state of an intermediate transfer belt 10 and photoreceptors 40Y, M, C, K in a multiple-color mode and a monochrome mode by displacing a suspension roller 15. The contact/separation mechanism has holding members 72F and 72R that hold the suspension roller 15 movably to an intermediate transfer frame, and thrusts the holding members against a reference shaft 70 that is a positioning reference of the intermediate transfer frame to position the suspension roller 15.
