To provide an image forming apparatus capable of returning more quickly to a normal operation state from a runaway state, while preventing problems due to the occurrence of contention of control to peripheral devices between a main CPU and a sub CPU that controls an image forming engine.
A main CPU 201 starts up a main motor 213 after resetting a runaway sub CPU 203, and causes a secondary transfer clutch 216 to be subjected to pressure-welding. Accordingly, the main motor 213 is started up, and the secondary transfer clutch 216 is pressure-welded, and thereby recording sheets remain in an image forming apparatus are ejected. Subsequently, upon completion of downloading of firmware, and confirmation of having been returned from runaway, the sub CPU 203 does not perform control access to the main motor 213 and the secondary transfer clutch 216 in an initial operation after the return.
