To provide an image forming apparatus capable of controlling image density to be constant without executing imaging condition adjustment control using reference patches and increasing toner consumption and downtime of the apparatus.
An image forming apparatus 10 includes: a developing device 4 that develops an electrostatic latent image formed on a latent image carrier 1 with a developer to form a toner image by conveying a developer carried on a developer carrier 3 to a developing area; an intermediate transfer belt 8 on which the toner image is intermediate-transferred; and detection means 6 provided to detect the toner image. The image forming apparatus 10 can acquire the number of pixels of an output image from a writing device, and can change imaging conditions of the developing device 4 on the basis of a detection result of the detection means 6 for acquiring an appropriate toner adhesion amount. In particular, the image forming apparatus 10 analyzes the output image to extract a specific area that matches with predetermined writing conditions, and detects the toner image on the intermediate transfer belt 8 in the specific area with the detection means 6 to change the imaging conditions.
