PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect characteristics of a recording medium in a saved space.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus that forms an image on a recording medium 90 conveyed in an apparatus body includes: a first abutting member 25 and a second abutting member 21 which are provided opposite to each other so as to hold the recording medium 90 being conveyed; recording medium detection means 20 provided for at least one of the first abutting member 25 and the second abutting member 21 and detecting characteristics of the recording medium 90; and guide faces 55 and 56 which guide movable directions of the first abutting member 25 and the second abutting member 21 to directions perpendicular to the recording medium 90 held by the first abutting member 25 and the second abutting member 21.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
