To prevent degradation in the picture quality of a medium document region caused by generational duplication by automatically recognizing the layout of a document.
An original data of a document is preserved. A composite document is read which comprises a medium document that is applied with specific conversion and added with a detection mark for detecting the conversion. A region of the medium document is detected in the composite document based on the change of the spatial information of the detection mark. Then, original data that have been preserved are applied with specific conversion, and data of a region of the medium document which is detected are replaced with the original data that have been converted to generate a replaced document for outputting.
