An interpolation frame produced by motion compensation interpolation is inserted between adjacent input frames. In the case the variation in motion vector is large in a certain region, since the image quality in the region may be deteriorated due to failure of the motion compensation interpolation, the region of the interpolation frame is made darker so as to make the deterioration less conspicuous. Then, the region of the former or later input frame is made brighter so as to make the brightness decline due to darkening of the region of the interpolation frame less conspicuous.
