An image processing device comprises: image smoothing means for smoothing a target image having a pixel value consisting of plural color components with plural different degrees of smoothing to generate plural smooth images; calculation means for calculating, for each smooth image, a color difference which is the difference between the pixel value of a predetermined color component of the target image and the pixel value of a color component different from the predetermined color component of the smooth image at each pixel position of the target image, and calculating the variances of the calculated color differences; determination means for comparing the sharpnesses of respective color components of the target image based on the variances of the color differences to determine the color component having the maximum sharpness; and adjustment means for adjusting the sharpness of at least one color component of the target image based on the component having the maximum sharpness.
