To solve such a problem that the color of a background member used in a conventional image reader is divided into white and black each having disadvantages, respectively, and since a user must switch or set the switching of the white part and the black part of the background member according to a document to be read, efficiency of image reading operation is low.
A determination means for determining the type of a document is disposed on the upstream side of an image reading position in the conveyance direction of the document, and the color of a background member is switched based on the results from the determination means. Consequently, switching can be made to a background member suitable for the document without requiring the operation by the user.
