In the image reader for performing the read preprocessing using the white reference plate, performing read scanning thereafter, and performing shading correction processing, the plurality of white reference plates are provided, and by driving a white reference plate selection means when the abnormality of the set white reference plate is detected in the read preprocessing, a normal white reference plate different from the white reference plate whose abnormality is detected is selected and set to a read position, and the read preprocessing is performed again.
