PURPOSE: To easily attain the minituarization of the device by unnecessitating an intermediate part provided between both reference panels when the reference panel for transmission and the reference panel for reflection are adjacently installed.

CONSTITUTION: A reference panel 43 for reflection is installed at the rear starting side of an original 0, and a reference panel 42 for transmission is installed at the read ending side of the original 0. In the case of reading the reflected original, the home position of a scanner 4-II is set to the side of the reference panel 43 for reflection, in the case of reading the transmitted original, the home positions of scanners 3-I and 4-II are set to the side of the reference panel 42 for reflection, and the reference panels and the original 0 are successively read by one time of reciprocative scanning by the respective scanners. Further, even when the home positions of the respective scanners are set to the read ending side of the original 0 in the both cases of reading the reflected original and the transmitted original, prescribed reading is executed by one time of reciprocative scan by the respective scanners.
