The imaging apparatus 100 includes: an electronic imaging part 2 generating a subject image by photoelectrically converting the optical image of a subject passing through an imaging lens; a light emitting part 6 emitting light when imaging the subject; and a CPU 17 performing sensitivity decision processing for deciding ISO sensitivity when imaging the subject, distance calculation processing for obtaining the effective irradiation distance of the light emitted from the light emitting part when imaging the subject on the basis of the ISO sensitivity decided by the sensitivity decision processing and flash light emitting capability of the light emitting part, and performance control processing for controlling performance of imaging assist operation to assist adjustment of a zoom amount on the basis of the effective irradiation distance calculated by the distance calculation processing.
