An imaging apparatus with an electronic zoom function is equipped with an imaging element which carries out photoelectric conversion of a subject image, a switchover portion switching, when an information amount is reduced by thinning or adding signals of pixels within a screen of the imaging element, a first reduction reading mode which reads signals of almost all pixels within the screen with a predetermined information reduction rate to a second reduction reading mode which reads signals of pixels in a predetermined range smaller than all of the range within the screen of the imaging element with the predetermined information reduction rate, and a controller which controls the switchover portion so as to switch the first reduction reading mode and the second reduction reading mode with each other according to an expansion rate of an electronic zoom.
