To improve combustion performance of an internal combustion engine during stratified charge combustion.
During a compression stroke, stratified air-fuel mixture is produced by injecting fuel from a fuel injection valve 11 toward a cavity 41 formed on a piston 4. The stratified charge combustion is carried out by igniting the air-flow mixture with a spark plug 12 and, by controlling an opening of a swirl control valve 14 disposed on one of two intake ports 5, a swirl flow which will become weak with an increase in a load in a stratified charge combustion area is generated inside a combustion chamber 1. Thus, clamping of the stratified mixture can be increased with an increase in the load from a low-load range to a high-load range, and the stratified charge combustion with sufficient stability, suppressing possible increases in smoke and HC, can be realized.
