To provide an inkjet printing apparatus and a wiping method capable of transferring a sufficient and stable application amount of a wetting liquid while reducing a load applied to a wiper when a transferring portion permeated with the wetting liquid abuts the wiper and suppressing deterioration of the wiper.
A wetting liquid retaining unit 140 has the transferring portion 221 for abutting the wiper 120 and transferring the wetting liquid. A provided configuration moves the wetting liquid retaining unit 140 to a first position which is a position capable of abutting the wiper 120 and a second position not capable of abutting the same. Thus, the transferring portion 221 can abut the wiper 120 from a Z direction (vertical direction) without giving a drag force owing to movement of the wiper 120 to the wiper 120. As a result, the wetting liquid can be transferred only through a drag force from a comparatively-flexibly-deformable height direction (Z direction) substantially without giving a drag force from its thickness direction (Y direction) or its width direction (X direction) or friction with the transferring portion to the wiper 120.
