PURPOSE: To provide the subject intermediate that has a specific chemical structure and can readily and effectively prepare a specific sizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: The objective intermediate has at least one anionic or acidic group which is optionally in the form of a salt and at least two hydrophobic substituents which each have at least 5 carbon atoms, at least two of the most adjacent hydrophobic substituents being bonded to each other with a linking member which has at least 2 hereto atoms, and is represented by formula I, formula II or formula III (t is 1 or 2; R1 through R3 are each a 6-22C alkyl, alkenyl where in the case of t=1, R1 and R2 are different from each other). The compound of formula I is prepared by allowing (A) one mole of a polyalkylenepolyamine of 3-6N atoms and 4-40C atoms that is unsubstituted or mono-substituted with an N-alkyl or N-alkenyl of 6-22C atoms to react with 1-(the number of N atoms in the component A-(minus) 1) mole(s) of a 6-22C alkyl or alkenyl isocyanate.
