Abstract:

To achieve a stable combustion condition by increasing intake air temperatures and/or intake air pressures, in an internal combustion engine which has an unstable combustion condition when compression end pressure in a combustion chamber is lowered during light loading, in particular.

The internal combustion engine comprises compression end pressure detecting means for detecting the compression end pressure in the combustion chamber, a supercharger for compressing intake air, and an exhaust air recirculating device for recirculating exhaust air from the internal combustion engine into an intake passage for the internal combustion engine. When the unstable combustion condition is established during light loading, supercharging pressure generated by the supercharger is controlled in accordance with the compression end pressure to increase the pressure of the intake air to be sucked into the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine and/or the temperature of the exhaust air to be recirculated by the exhaust air recirculating device is increased in accordance with the compression end pressure.
