Abstract:

To provide an internal combustion engine capable of improving the environmental performance of a vehicle by controlling an oxygen supply means.

In an engine system 10, a certain amount of air is supplied to an exhaust pipe 210 via a secondary air flow passage 216, and air sucked from the outside of the vehicle passes through a separator 219 and is stored in a storage tank 220 as oxygen-enriched gas including a larger amount of oxygen compared with the air. An ECU 100 executes exhaust emission control processing. In the exhaust emission control processing, for example, a control valve 222 is opened for a period when a cooling water temperature Tw of the engine 200 becomes below a threshold Tw0, and the oxygen-enriched gas is supplied to the exhaust pipe 210. In addition, the supply amount of the oxygen-enriched gas is controlled so as to vary according to the cooling water temperature Tw. As a result, the oxygen concentration of gas supplied into the exhaust pipe 210 is increased for a period when the warm-up of the engine 200 is insufficient, and the combustion reaction of substances discharged into the exhaust pipe 210 such as HC which is an unburned substance and CO which is an incompletely burned substance is promoted.
