In the inverter device for both AC/DC that has a rectification circuit 11, a smoothing capacitor C, and an inverter 20 for outputting the voltage of the smoothing capacitor to AC for outputting to a motor M, and allows DC input DC to be located between the AC input terminal of the rectification circuit and a negative voltage output terminal, an input terminal R of the rectification circuit is connected to a positive voltage output terminal 14 by a lead wire 21 when inputting DC, and at the same time an AC input terminal T is connected to an output terminal 16 of a switch 13 by a lead wire 22. The DC input supplies DC to the smoothing capacitor and the inverter via the lead wire 21 and a thyristor switch. In damping operation, the generation power of a motor passes through the inverter, the lead wire 22, the diode 6, and the lead wire 21 and is regenerated at the side of the DC input DC. AC is inputted by avoiding the lead wires 21 and 22. When AC is to be inputted, the generation power of the motor is not regenerated at the AC side.
