To obtain an olefin polymerization catalyst which has high activity and can give an olefin polymer industrially advantageously without deposition on the inside wall of a reactor by mixing a transition metal compound with an ionic polymer compound and an organoaluminum compound.
This catalyst is prepared by contact among 1 mol (in terms of the transition metal) of a compound of a group 8-10 transition metal, 0.1-100,000 mol, particularly, 0.5-10,000 mol of an ionic polymer compound comprising structural units of formula I and II or of formula II alone and having a degree of polymerization of 50-500 and 0.1-100,000 mol, particularly, 0.5-10,000 mol (in terms of the aluminum atoms) of an organoaluminum compound. In the formulae, R1 to R7 are each H, a 1-20C (halo)hydrocarbon group, or a silicon-containing group; R8 to R16 are each a 1-20C (halo)hydrocarbon group; Z and Y are each a 1-20C alkylene, a 6-20C arylene, silylene, germylene, O, CO, S, SO2, -, or NR17; R17 is a 1-12C alkyl or a 6-12C aryl; X is an onium compound; and (k) and (l) are each 0 or 1, provided that k+l≥1.
