PURPOSE: To obtain a biologically pure cultured material of Kibdelosporangium aridum largum having identifiable characteristics of ATCC 39922, and its mutants and derivatives, and producing a glycopeptide antibiotic substance by a culture in an aqueous medium.
CONSTITUTION: This Kibdelosporangium aridum subsp. largum (SK&F-AAD-609) has identifiable characteristics of ATCC 39922 and its mutants and derivatives, which can produce AAD-609 antibiotic substance expressed by formula I [R1 is mannosyl or H; R2 is formula II (R3 is an 8-12C alkyl or an alkenyl which may be substituted by hydroxyl as desired)] in a recoverable amount by a culture in an aqueous nutrient medium containing carbon and nitrogen sources capable of being catabolized. The microorganism was isolated from a soil of a desert collected at Pima county in the State of Arizona.
