An elongated strip-like fastening member is described which has a base portion (20) and a multiplicity of hook-like engaging elements (21) in the form of projections upstanding from the base portion. These hook-like projections each have a stem supported at one end on the base portion and a radial extension on the unsupported end of the stem. The hook-like projections and the base portion are composed of the same polymeric material. On the side of the fastening member opposite the hook-like elements is a sheet material (10). The fastening member is in effect a laminate in which the base portion (20) is integrally joined with the sheet material (10) by a polymer forming the base portion encapsulating at least a portion of one side of the sheet material. To achieve this the fastening member is formed by a process in which the polymeric material is delivered to the surface of a forming roller under conditions causing the material to form the base portion on the surface of the forming roller and to fill inwardly extending hook-like cavities disposed about the periphery of the forming roller. The sheet material is introduced to the polymeric material under conditions causing the polymer forming the base portion to be permanently joined to the sheet material. The completed strip-like fastening member is removed from the forming roller while pulling the engaging elements from the cavities of forming roller.
