To provide a light detection device which is capable of performing an inspection with a higher precision, and a paper sheet processing apparatus with the light detection device.
A light detection device is configured to detect residual light from paper sheets coated with a phosphor having a residual light property and includes an illumination section, a light receiving section, a fluorescent reference member, an adjusting section and a detection section. The illumination section irradiates conveyed paper sheets with excitation light. The light receiving section detects an intensity of incident light. The fluorescent reference member is provided at a position opposed to the illumination section and includes a fluorescent member which emits fluorescent light when the excitation light is incident, and a light guide body which guides the fluorescent light emitted from the fluorescent member to be incident to the light receiving section. The adjusting section adjusts at least one of a light-emitting intensity of the illumination section and a light-receiving sensitivity of the light-receiving section on the basis of the intensity of light detected by the light receiving section from fluorescent light emitted from the fluorescent member, passed through the light guide body and incident to the light receiving section.
