Title:
LIQUID CRYSTAL/POLYMER COMPOSITE FILM BASED ON DISPERSION IN PVA AND ITS PRODUCTION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3396492
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject homogeneous film excellent in adaptability to coating, and useful for obtaining a cell excellent in electro-optical characteristics and visibility by using a specified PVA as the principal constituent of the polymer matrix so as to provide a specified ratio of PVA to liquid crystal in a liquid crystal/polymer composite film wherein liquid crystal particles are dispersed in a polymer matrix.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal/polymer composite film comprises a dispersion of liquid crystal (e.g. E-44) particles in a polymer matrix, wherein the principal constituent of the polymer matrix is a PVA having a degree of polymerization of 300 to 1,200 and a degree of saponification of 50-85% (e.g. K2-05, a product of Nippon Synthetic Chemical Industry) and the weight ratio of PVA to liquid crystal is (5:95) to (50:50). The figure shows the relation between the molecular weight of PVA and the surface tension of an aqueous PVA solution.
