Title:
LIQUID CRYSTAL ALIGNMENT FILM AND LIQUID CRYSTAL DEVICE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3955694
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment film having a function to align liquid crystalline molecules (especially discotic liquid crystalline molecules) substantially in the perpendicular direction by incorporating a specified modified polyvinylalcohol into the liquid crystal alignment film.
SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment film formed on a substrate to align a liquid crystal contains a specified modified polyvinylalcohol. The modified polyvinyl alcohol contains 2 to 80 mol% of recurring units having two, three or four aromatic rings or aromatic heterocycles in the side chains and 0.1 to 10 mol% of recurring units having polymerizable groups in the side chains. The aromatic rings in the recurring units having two, three or four aromatic rings or aromatic heterocycles in the side chains include a benzene ring, indene ring, naphthalene ring or the like. The aromatic heterocycles are generally five or six-member unsatd. heterocycles. The heterocycles preferably have double bonds in the max. number. The aromatic heterocycles include a furan ring, thiophene ring, pyrrole ring or the like.
