PURPOSE: To improve the visual field angle, visibility, and light utilization efficiency and to manufacture the liquid crystal display device economically by applying a voltage selectively to respective pixel areas of a macromolecule dispersed type liquid crystal layer where adjacent pixels contain pigments differing in hue.
CONSTITUTION: A display layer 1 is inserted and held between two substrates (glass) 11 and 12 provided with transparent conductive films 13 which operate as electrodes consists of respective pixel areas (RGB) formed of a macromolecule matrix layer 15 containing the pigments of the primary colors R, G, and B and powder, preferably, capsules of liquid crystal 14 which is dispersed therein. The respective pixel areas of R, G, and B are arranged in regular pattern and provided with corresponding electrodes respectively, and the voltage is applied, pixel by pixel. Then the hue of the matrix layer when the voltage is applied or black when not is displayed in normal mode according to the combination of the liquid crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy and (p) type pigments. In reverse mode, on the other hand, the opposite hues are displayed according to the combination of negative liquid crystal and (n) type pigments.
