Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a gradational display by specifying the ratio of light transmissivity of light transmissivity control layers for many picture elements in one display unit. CONSTITUTION:The light transmissivity control layers 31-34 are provided inside an opposite substrate 4, i.e. on the side of a TFT array substrate 2 and arranged in areas of picture elements T1-T4, and the ratio of light transmissivity of the light transmissivity control layers 31-34 is set to 2<0>:2<1>:2<2>...2, i.e. 1:2:4:8. Therefore, the light passing and light shielding of the picture elements T1-T4 are combined to represent 16 gradations. Consequently, the gradational display is made without increasing the area of one display unit nor adjusting finely a voltage applied to liquid crystal of each picture element.
