The liquid crystal display has a liquid crystal display panel in which input display data are inputted and a backlight disposed on the rear surface of the liquid crystal display panel and is provided with a first means detecting the gradation of each pixel data from the input display data, a second means detecting existence of the gradation of the pixel data detected by the first means in each step of a previously determined gradation, a third means adding the number of gradations detected by the second means as existence and a fourth means outputting a control signal to the backlight by segmenting the control range of the luminance of the backlight into a plurality of segments and associating the magnitude of the added value by the third means with the segments.
