To obtain a guest-host liquid crystal element having good light resistance which is suitable for active driving method by forming a UV-absorbing layer having specified transmission limit wavelength characteristics.
This transmission liquid crystal display element consists of a UV-absorbing layer 2, glass substrate 3, orienting film 4, transparent electrode 5, host liquid crystal 6 and dichroic dye 7. In this element, the UV-absorbing layer 2 has the transmission limit wavelengths between >380nm and ≤430nm. As for the UV-absorbing layer, the following materials can be used. They are various films such as a UV-cut filter, polarizing filter and double refraction phase different filter each comprising polyvinylalcohol, triacetylcellulose, polycarbonate, polypropylene, polysulfone, polethylsulfone, polyacrylate, vinyl chloride, acryl resin, fluorocarbon resin, etc., or a laminated body of these films or a substrate and films with an adhesive layer containing a UV-absorbent.
