PURPOSE: To obtain a vivid bar graph type temperature display easy to see, by charging a nematic liquid crystal, where chiral matters and dichromatic coloring matters are added, to a wedge-shaped cell which is formed with a pair of electrode substrates subjected to the vertical orientation treatment by changing continuously the interval between these electrode substrates.
CONSTITUTION: Glass substrates 11 and 11' which are provided with transparent electrodes 22 and 22' and are subjected to the vertical orientation treatment are sealed through two spacers 33 and 33' different in thickness by materials 44 to form a wedge-shaped cell, and a mixed liquid crystal material 55 consisting of a mixed nematic liquid crystal having a wide temperature range (-20W96°C) of the liquid crystal phase where cholesterol chloride, where the helical pitch is much changed by the variance of temperature, as a chiral matter and dichromatic coloring matters are added is injected and sealed in this wedge-shaped cell to obtain a temperature display cell. In accordance with the rise of the temperature of a liquid crystal layer, the helical pitch is increased linearly, and a length (x) of a vertical orientation region A is increased, and the transparent region A is increased, and a colored region B is reduced. Thus, a vivid temperature display is obtained.
