NEW MATERIAL:A smectic liquid crystal compound expressed by the formula (m and n are natural numbers of 1W18, provided that either m or n is natural number of ≥10).
EXAMPLE: 2,3-Dicyano-4-decyloxyphenyl 4-octyloxygenzoate.
USE: A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition, capable of exhibiting smectic C phase and having great negative dielectric anisotropy without impairing characteristics thereof.
PREPARATION: 2,3-Dicyanohydroquinone is reacted with an alkyl bromide by the Williamson method to give a 1,4-dialkoxy-2,3-dicyanobenzene and 4- alkoxy-2,3-dicyanohenol. The resultant compounds are separated and purified to afford a 4-alkoxy-2,3-dicyanophenol, which is then reacted with a 4- alkoxybenzoyl chloride and purified to provide the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
